How Much Robot Mower Do You Need? Acreage, Runtime and Charging Explained

A robot mower advertised for one acre is not necessarily the same kind of solution as another one-acre mower. Coverage ratings depend on mowing speed, battery capacity, charging time, navigation efficiency and how many hours per day the machine is expected to operate.

Recommended acreage is a system rating

Manufacturers usually size product variants around recommended mowing area. Treat that figure as the starting point, then check whether the property’s complexity makes the job harder than a similarly sized open lawn.

Runtime per charge

Runtime tells you how long the mower can work before recharging under the manufacturer’s test conditions. It does not by itself tell you how much lawn will be completed because speed, cutting pattern and terrain also matter.

Mowing area per charge

When a manufacturer publishes area covered per charge, it can be more useful than runtime alone. Segway Navimow’s current comparison materials, for example, publish per-charge area for several product configurations as well as recommended total lawn size.

Charging time

A mower that charges quickly can complete more work in a day even if another machine has a longer single-charge runtime. Recharge-and-resume behavior makes daily throughput a better metric than battery size alone for large properties.

Property complexity reduces effective capacity

Slopes, trees, obstacles, narrow passages, separate zones and long transit routes can reduce effective mowing efficiency. An acreage rating established on simpler terrain should not be treated as a guarantee for a complicated property.

Do not automatically buy the largest model

Oversizing can add cost without solving the property’s real constraint. Navigation under trees, minimum passage width or slope capability may matter more than maximum acreage.

What to compare

Look at recommended mowing area, area per charge, runtime, charging time, mowing speed, supported zones/maps, slope capability and navigation environment together. YRL’s future property matcher will combine these with actual property conditions rather than filtering products from acreage alone.
